STORY AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY CHRIS
POH |
| The
village of Watkins Glen in many ways
mirrors man’s tenuous and somewhat conflicted relationship with the
natural world. While nature seemingly suggests that we “take more
time,” we are determined to take the next turn in the shortest time
possible. So while the waters of Glen Creek meander along the ancient
path towards New York’s Seneca Lake, men and women continue to push the
limits of speed and endurance powering into the chicane and loops at Watkins Glen International,
often forgetting that the race doesn’t always go to the swiftest. But for those that have mastered life in the slipstream there is that understanding that it is the balance between man’s ingenuity, combined with a bit of mechanical tinkering, and the classical elements of earth, air, fire and water that normally determines one’s place at the finish. This lesson can be applied to most human endeavors, including the making of beer. Along the main straightaway in Watkins Glen at the CROOKED ROOSTER PUB that axiom has been practiced and perfected. It is here that Seth Weisel, the head brewer for Rooster Fish Brewing creates a superb selection of handcrafted ales. The marriage of American hops, organic malts and the cool fresh water from Seneca Lake have produced a product that has pleased the palates of loyal patrons and beer devotees since 2004. |

| Besides
the
exceptional brews, the CROOKED ROOSTER offers a
friendly
setting and a great view of the race. At any given moment there is a
constant flow of foreign engineering and domestic muscle in search of a
good stretch of asphalt or the next glass of Cabernet. For many that
motor to this region Watkins Glen is the gateway to
New York State’s
wine country. And the CROOKED ROOSTER is the
unofficial grandstand of
the unsanctioned Finger Lakes Grand Prix. On several occasions I have run that circuit myself. There are few places in America better suited to renew ones romance with the open road or the pleasures of the grape. But with the passing of time I am much more prone to watch the race from the sidelines, surrounded by loyal friends while raising a glass of well hopped ale in a place that is snug, safe and welcoming…a place somewhere in between a checkered past and the checkered flag…a place like the CROOKED ROOSTER PUB. |
